What I’ve done below is to measure how long each club has spent in each of the three main “game states” – i.e. winning, drawing and losing.

I’ve then converted these into percentages because I include stoppage time, which means that even when every club has played the same number of matches they will have a slightly different total number of minutes played.

I’ve then ranked clubs by the difference between the share of time they’ve spent winning versus losing, which feels like the fairest way to do it (and also gives you the nice smooth graph below).

Hull‘s lead at the top of the actual table looks deserved here: they’ve spent almost half of their playing time in the lead and only a handful of clubs have spent a smaller share of minutes in a losing position.

Third-placed Ipswich are a bit of an enigma, having spent more time losing than winning so far thanks to some late turnarounds. Meanwhile Bristol Rovers are in the opposite situation, having led more than they’ve trailed overall yet somehow finding themselves in 19th place.

Swindon aren’t finding the adjustment to League 1 easy: they’re one of only two clubs in the top four divisions to have spent over half of their playing time in a losing position.
