National League match timelines: 23-24 Jan 2016

As usual, here are the match timelines for each of the weekend’s National League matches. There’s a full explanation of these here, but in a nutshell they track how each team’s expected goals tally (the number of goals that the average team would have scored from their shots) changed over the course of the match.

You can browse previous timelines by selecting “VISUALISATIONS > TIMELINES” from the menu.

First of all, here are all of the timelines together, with the same vertical scale to help you pick out which saw the most (and least) goalmouth action:

You can also compare these with my preview graphics for these matches here.

2016-01-23 Boreham W Eastleigh

Eastleigh were considered favourites here against a Boreham Wood side who have struggled going forward this season, but didn’t live up to their billing. The home side started the brighter and look to have deserved their lead, with the visitors scraping a late point that they just about earned.

2016-01-23 Bromley Tranmere

Tranmere were another away favourite this week but did a much better job of performing like one. The visitors dominated from the off here, with Bromley only able to threaten once in the first half an hour, but coasted for the last 30 minutes after scoring the game’s only goal.

2016-01-23 Chester Southport

After mustering the game’s first attempt on goal, Chester were then worryingly quiet until after the hour mark here. Visitors Southport looked the far more likely to find the net, having offered a far more regular goal threat, and will be the more disappointed with the draw.

2016-01-23 Forest G Braintree

Braintree look to have been thoroughly outclassed here, allowing Forest Green sufficient chances to have produced a far more one-sided scoreline and creating little themselves. Defence has been the visitors’ strong point this season but they were regularly carved open by their high-flying hosts.

2016-01-23 Grimsby Altrincham

That’s nine goals without reply in two matches for Grimsby now, admittedly both against a side struggling to stay in the division, and eight wins from a possible nine. The Mariners had netted twice before visitors Altrincham had taken their first shot and continued to rattle in efforts until the final whistle.

2016-01-23 Kidderminster Guiseley

Kidderminster’s finishing let them down here in a match that they created sufficient opportunities to have won. The home side only took one shot in the opening 35 minutes but grew into the game thereafter, with their best chances coming after the hour mark, but it was Guiseley who made the late breakthrough to claim the points.

2016-01-23 Macclesfield Aldershot

This contest looks to have been neck and neck until the closing stages, with Aldershot’s finishing the main difference between the sides. The visitors were also able to threaten more regularly in a less intense second half, with Macclesfield unable to maintain their pace from before the interval.

2016-01-23 Torquay Gateshead

Gateshead scored with their first shot of each half in a game of few chances, with Torquay unable to find a cutting edge despite threatening more regularly. The Gulls’ opportunities were of lower average quality and allowed the three best opportunities of the match to fall to their visitors. 2016-01-23 Welling Barrow

Welling’s first-half penalty promised to give the lowest-rated side in the division a much-needed victory but they were on the back foot for much of the match thereafter and ultimately succumbed to their visitors regular attacks. Barrow had started relatively unevenly themselves but responded well to falling behind, pressing forward frequently and keeping their hosts at bay.

2016-01-23 Woking Halifax

Woking were reduced to ten men just before the half hour mark but still managed to strike first here. Haliax replied almost immediately however and, perhaps unsurprisingly given their man advantage, created the better chances overall. The second half began slowly and it took the visitors until the 70th minute to make their advantage count, with no winning goal forthcoming. 2016-01-23 Wrexham Lincoln

The home side were by far the slower starters here, finding themselves a goal down to a Lincoln penalty with a quarter of an hour gone, but burst into life after half an hour and dominated the match thereafter. Their visitors rarely threatened after going ahead but can still be disappointed not to have held on for a point overall.

2016-01-24 Dover Cheltenham

Dover must have thought they’d done enough to win this one, having out-created the league leaders and netting with fewer than ten minutes remaining, but a nightmare finish which saw them concede a penalty and then another close-range effort almost immediately afterwards.
